Professional maintenance is essential, but good aesthetic laser care also happens between service visits.
Our technicians often find damage that could have been caught earlier by the people using the machine every day.
The good news is that preventing many of these problems does not take much time.
Here are five simple habits that can help protect your laser.
1. Inspect the Handpiece Before You Fire
Start with the treatment window.
Debris, residue, or damage on the window can affect how energy travels through the handpiece. Over time, heat can damage the window, optics, or housing.
Before the treatment day begins:
- Inspect the treatment window
- Clean it according to the manufacturer’s procedure
- Check for discoloration
- Look for cracks or burned areas
- Make sure the handpiece looks normal
Stop using the handpiece if you notice a burning smell, visible damage, unusual heat, or a sudden change in firing behavior.
Do not push through the schedule with a damaged handpiece.
A small optical problem can become a much larger repair.
2. Protect the Fiber and Umbilical
Fibers and handpiece cables deserve careful handling.
Avoid tight bends, sharp turns, pinching, or placing heavy objects on them.
Always follow the manufacturer’s minimum bend radius for the specific delivery system.
Whenever possible:
- Store handpieces in their proper holders
- Keep fibers off the floor
- Do not tightly coil cables
- Keep treatment-room chairs away from them
- Avoid pulling the machine by the handpiece cable
A fiber can look fine on the outside while developing internal damage.
Good storage habits help prevent that.
3. Keep the Machine Cool and Clean
Heat is hard on electronics.
Dust and blocked airflow can make cooling more difficult.
Keep the area around the machine clear. Do not block ventilation openings with towels, boxes, equipment, or furniture.
As part of normal room cleaning:
- Wipe exterior air intakes
- Check that vents are unobstructed
- Keep dust away from the machine
- Inspect user-accessible filters where applicable
If your platform has an operator-serviceable air filter, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning or replacement schedule.
Do not open internal panels unless the procedure is intended for operators.
4. Watch the Cooling System
You do not need tools to notice many cooling-system problems.
Take a quick look around the machine when opening the treatment room.
Watch for:
- Water underneath the system
- Moisture behind the machine
- Coolant warnings
- Flow errors
- Changes in pump sound
- Unusual temperature warnings
If the platform displays coolant level, pay attention to changes.
A recurring flow fault should not be treated as something to keep resetting.
If you find an active leak, burning smell, visible damage, or another safety concern, stop using the system and have it evaluated.
Small cooling problems can become expensive when they are ignored.
5. Document Every Error
When an error appears, take a picture.
Then write down what happened.
Record:
- Date and time
- Error code
- Handpiece being used
- Treatment mode
- What happened immediately before the error
- Whether the error returned
Even intermittent faults matter.
A problem that appears once every two weeks can be difficult to reproduce during a service visit.
A simple error log gives the technician a history to work from.
That can make diagnosis much faster.
Daily Aesthetic Laser Care Does Not Replace Maintenance
These five habits help protect your equipment, but they do not replace professional preventative maintenance.
Scheduled service can include deeper checks such as:
- Metered output verification
- Cooling-system service
- Filter replacement
- Handpiece testing
- Optical inspection
- Electrical inspection
- Calibration checks
- Error-history review
Operators handle the daily warning signs.
Technicians measure what operators cannot see.
The two work together.
Five Minutes Can Protect Years of Equipment Life
Good aesthetic laser care does not have to be complicated.
Inspect the handpiece. Protect the fiber. Keep the machine cool. Watch for water problems. Record errors.
Those habits take minutes.
More importantly, they give you a better chance of finding small problems before they become major repairs.
The best machines we service are rarely the ones that were simply “lucky.”
They are usually the ones somebody paid attention to.
