As a field-service baseline, we recommend a complete preventative maintenance visit at least once each year.
A proper annual service should include more than clearing a reminder on the screen. The technician should inspect the machine as a complete system.
Typical annual maintenance may include:
- DI, particle, air, and water filter replacement
- Cooling-system inspection and service
- Internal dust and debris removal
- Optical inspection and cleaning
- Low- and high-voltage power-supply checks
- Calibration verification
- Interlock and safety-system testing
- External output measurement
Many platforms display their own maintenance reminders. Yet we regularly open machines whose reminders were dismissed for years.
Annual service should be the minimum baseline, not something postponed until the machine develops a fault.

When Should a Laser Be Serviced More Often?
Usage is one of the biggest factors.
A hair-removal system firing all day, five or six days each week, accumulates pulses quickly. It also places greater demands on lamps, cooling systems, filters, and other components.
For high-volume practices, twice-yearly aesthetic laser maintenance may make more sense than annual service.
Platform Type Matters
Different technologies also have different maintenance concerns.
For example:
- Dye lasers may require scheduled dye-system service.
- CO2 and erbium systems have optical and tube considerations.
- Diode platforms depend heavily on cooling-system health.
- IPL systems can develop gradual optical-path degradation.
- Alexandrite and Nd systems place significant demands on flashlamps, cooling, and optics.
Therefore, a service schedule should reflect the machine itself, not just the calendar.
Age and Environment Matter Too
A fifteen-year-old platform producing revenue every day deserves closer monitoring than a lightly used two-year-old system.
Environment also affects equipment life. Dust, heat, frequent transportation, and poor ventilation can increase stress on internal components.
Older machines are not automatically unreliable. However, more components may be approaching the later stages of their service life.
Never Skip Output Verification
Whatever maintenance schedule you choose, we recommend measuring delivered output at least annually.
Output drift does not always trigger an error code.
In our field work, we have measured systems delivering 10%, 20%, and even 30% less energy than selected. We have also encountered a system firing above its selected settings because of an optical problem.
Under-delivery can quietly affect treatment consistency. Over-delivery presents a more serious safety concern.
A successful internal calibration does not always prove the energy reaching the treatment area is correct. Therefore, an external calibrated meter provides an important independent measurement.
What Should Annual Laser Maintenance Include?
The exact procedure depends on the platform. However, a thorough PM should evaluate the systems that affect performance, cooling, safety, and reliability.
The technician should inspect the laser rather than simply replace consumables. Measurements should also be documented so future visits can identify changes over time.

Practices with reliable equipment often follow three simple habits:
- Respond to maintenance reminders. Do not repeatedly dismiss them.
- Record every fault code. Include the date and what the machine was doing.
- Pay attention to changes. New sounds, smells, leaks, or performance changes deserve attention.
These habits give technicians valuable history when service is needed.
