Few brands appear in our field work as often as Candela.
Our recent Candela laser service work has included GentleMax Pro and Pro Plus systems, PicoWay, GentleYAG Pro-U, GentleLASE, Vbeam Perfecta, CO2RE, GentleMax Classic, and several Syneron-Candela platforms.
That range has taught us something important.
Candela systems can stay productive for a long time, but only when owners understand the wear patterns that matter.
Here is what we look for.
Candela Laser Service on the Gentle Family
The Gentle family includes some of the most established hair-removal platforms in aesthetics.
Candela’s current Gentle Pro Series includes the GentleMax Pro Plus, GentleMax Pro, GentleLase Pro, and GentleYag Pro. The family uses 755 nm Alexandrite, 1064 nm Nd, or both depending on the model.
For owners, the biggest maintenance areas are usually predictable.
Watch the Laser Head
The laser head is one of the most important components in the machine.
As flashlamps age, technicians may see changes in operating voltage, output, calibration behavior, or pulse history.
That is why we track more than whether the machine fires.
Depending on the platform, service may include:
- Metered output
- Lamp and pulse counts
- Relevant high-voltage readings
- Head condition
- Cooling-system condition
- Calibration results
We have found leaking heads, damaged flowtubes, worn optical components, and rods requiring repair or replacement.
Those problems are much easier to plan for when the machine has a documented history.
Handpieces and DCD Need Attention Too
The delivery side of the system sees constant daily use.
Our Candela service work has included:
- Burned handpiece optics
- Melted or damaged shell covers
- Spot-size sensing problems
- Fiber issues
- DCD solenoid faults
- Cryogen leaks
- Pressure-related faults
Small delivery-system problems can affect both treatment performance and machine usability.
Therefore, handpieces should be inspected during routine maintenance instead of waiting until they fail.
The Dynamic Cooling Device also deserves regular attention because it is an important part of the Gentle platform’s treatment delivery system.
PicoWay Requires Delivery-Path Testing
PicoWay creates a different service challenge.
The system uses picosecond technology and multiple wavelength configurations. Candela’s current PicoWay platform includes 532 nm and 1064 nm through the Zoom applicator, along with additional 730 nm, 785 nm, and Resolve options depending on configuration.
For service, the optical delivery path matters enormously.
In our field work, we have found systems where output near the source was much stronger than output measured after the articulated arm.
That tells us where to look.
Possible causes may include:
- Arm misalignment
- Damaged mirrors
- Optical contamination
- Handpiece transmission loss
- Delivery-path damage
We have also seen individual wavelengths perform differently on the same system.
Therefore, we do not assume one good reading clears the entire machine.
Where appropriate, we measure relevant wavelengths and compare different points in the delivery path.
The Meter Matters More Than the Screen
This principle applies across Candela laser service.
A machine can pass an internal check and still have a problem farther down the delivery path.
That is why we use external output measurement where appropriate.
For example, we may evaluate:
- Energy at the laser source
- Energy after an articulated arm
- Output through the treatment handpiece
- Different wavelengths separately
- Performance before and after repair
A repair is not complete simply because the machine fires.
We want the measurement to agree too.
Vbeam, CO2RE, and Other Candela Platforms Have Their Own Patterns
Not every Candela system behaves like a GentleMax.
Vbeam platforms have their own consumables, optics, cooling, and dye-system considerations.
In one recent service case, a dye-system service corrected an energy-related fault that initially looked more serious.
CO2RE presents another type of optical system entirely.
Our work there has included aiming-beam replacement and optical alignment.
The lesson is simple:
Candela is a brand family, not one machine.
Service should follow the exact platform and revision.
Older Candela Systems Can Still Be Worth Maintaining
We continue to encounter older Candela machines that remain productive.
Recent work has included systems dating back well over a decade, including older GentleMax and GentleLASE platforms.
Age alone does not decide whether a laser should stay in service.
Instead, look at:
- Actual output
- Parts availability
- Head condition
- Handpiece condition
- Cooling health
- Repair history
- Current market value
OEM support may become limited on older equipment. However, a healthy machine may still have practical independent-service options.
That is where component-level diagnosis becomes valuable.
Instead of automatically replacing a large assembly, determine what actually failed first.
Preventative Maintenance Makes the Machine Knowable
A good Candela laser service history should tell a story.
We document information such as:
- Metered output
- Pulse counts
- Lamp counts
- Relevant head voltages
- DCD performance
- Cooling-system condition
- Handpiece condition
- Repairs performed
- Recurring faults
That history lets owners see trends.
A gradually rising voltage or declining output is much more useful when compared with last year’s reading.
Without records, every visit starts from zero.
Buying a Used Candela Laser
Candela systems are common in the pre-owned market.
That creates opportunity, but it also creates variation.
Two GentleMax Pros from the same year can have very different conditions.
Before buying, check:
- Output at each relevant wavelength
- Laser-head condition
- Lamp and pulse counts
- Relevant voltages
- Handpiece condition
- DCD operation
- Cooling-system health
- Error history
- Included accessories
- Service records
The same logic applies to PicoWay.
Verify the actual configuration, output, handpieces, and delivery system before judging the machine by model year alone.
Candela Laser Service Should Be Measured, Not Guessed
Good Candela laser service comes down to diagnosis, measurement, and documentation.
Track the laser head. Inspect the handpieces. Maintain the cooling and DCD systems. Test the optical path. Measure the output.
Most importantly, know what your individual machine is doing.
A Candela platform can have a long service life when its condition supports it.
Buy the machine, maintain the machine, and measure the machine—not just the badge.
