Firing through debris on a window can create heat and optical damage. Skipping routine cleaning allows contamination to build on treatment surfaces.

Fiber handling matters too. Coiling a delivery fiber tighter than its specified bend radius can stress the internal fiber.

Storage also makes a difference. Handpieces should remain secured in their designated holders rather than loose on carts or inside boxes.

Watch for early warning signs such as:

  • Inconsistent output
  • Visible discoloration
  • New cracks
  • Unusual heat
  • Burning smells
  • Changes in aiming beam quality

During one evaluation, output through a zoom handpiece measured about 15% low. The same wavelength measured closer to 10% low through the arm.

That difference pointed to additional loss inside the handpiece.

The operator had no obvious warning. Yet patients were receiving less energy than the selected setting suggested.

Damaged Optics Can Create a Chain Reaction

A small optics problem can become a much larger repair.

For example, a burned window can scatter energy instead of transmitting it cleanly. That scattered energy creates unwanted heat.

The heat can then damage surrounding components, shell covers, and delivery fibers.

What began as an optics replacement can eventually become a complete handpiece rebuild.

That is why continuing to fire through a visibly damaged window is rarely worth the risk.
