Every aesthetic laser tracks how many times it has fired.
That includes total head pulses, lamp pulses, and often handpiece pulses. These numbers help predict when major service may be coming.
However, many practice owners never check them.
What Pulse Counts Tell Us
Recent service visits showed very different levels of use.
One hair removal system had about 2.3 million pulses on its lamps. A picosecond laser had more than 5 million pulses on the head.
We also found a GentleYAG with 1.77 million pulses on one set of lamps. Another handpiece had more than 1 million pulses through its optics.
Meanwhile, one system had 5 million head pulses but only 158,000 lamp pulses.
That difference told us something important. The lamps had likely been replaced much more recently than the head.
Pulse Counts and Voltage Tell a Bigger Story
Pulse counts become even more useful when we compare them with high-voltage readings.
As flashlamps age, the system may need more voltage to maintain the same output. Therefore, rising voltage can help reveal developing wear.
On Candela systems, we track these readings over time.
In some cases, we have also found laser heads beginning to leak or show visible barium residue. At that point, the head needs professional evaluation.
Finding the problem during scheduled service gives the owner options.
A rebuild can be planned around the treatment schedule. Waiting for a failure can create unexpected downtime.
Lamps Are Consumables
Flashlamps wear out. That does not automatically mean something is wrong with the machine.
They are consumable parts, much like tires on a vehicle.
High-volume practices should expect lamp replacement as a normal operating expense. The pulse counter helps show where the lamps are in that service cycle.
Waiting too long can create other problems.
For example, worn lamps may require the system to work harder. Output can also begin to drift.
As a result, treatment performance may decline and other components may experience additional stress.
Pulse Counts Matter When Buying Used Lasers
Two used lasers can be the same model and year but have very different service histories.
One may have fresh lamps and a recently serviced head. Another may be approaching major maintenance.
From the outside, both machines may look identical.
That is why buyers should review:
- Head pulse counts
- Lamp pulse counts
- Handpiece counts
- High-voltage readings
- Service history
- Metered output
These numbers help show where the machine actually sits in its service life.
We have also evaluated systems with reset lamp counters. When counters have been changed without clear documentation, the machine’s history becomes harder to verify.
That uncertainty should affect how the equipment is evaluated and priced.
Know Your Laser’s Numbers
If you own a laser and do not know its current pulse counts, start tracking them.
We record pulse counts during preventative maintenance visits and compare them over time.
That turns major service costs into something easier to plan and budget.
