Start With the Pulse Counts

Pulse counts are similar to an odometer.

They help show how much use the machine, laser head, lamps, or handpieces have accumulated.

Depending on the platform, your report may show:

  • Lamp pulses
  • Handpiece pulses
  • Pulses since a component replacement

The number alone is not the whole story.

Look at how quickly it changes.

A machine adding hundreds of thousands of pulses each year is operating under a different workload than one adding only a fraction of that amount.

On some lamp-pumped systems, technicians also record high-voltage or other operating values.

As flashlamps and optical components age, the system may require more electrical drive to maintain output.

This may be the most valuable part of the entire report.

Recommendations tell you what the technician believes deserves attention next.

Examples might include:

  • Monitor operating voltage
  • Plan lamp replacement
  • Replace an aging filter
  • Recheck output at the next visit
  • Repair a worn handpiece window
  • Watch an intermittent flow fault

A recommendation does not always mean the machine needs immediate repair.

Some items are simply early warnings.

That gives you time to budget, schedule service during a slower period, or order parts before failure.

The earlier you understand the recommendation, the more options you have.

Pay Attention to Repeated Errors

Error history can tell a story too.

One isolated fault may never return.

The same fault appearing on three consecutive reports deserves more attention.

Look for repeated notes involving:

  • Calibration faults
  • Handpiece communication
  • Temperature warnings
  • DCD problems
  • Power issues
  • Intermittent shutdowns

Patterns help technicians narrow the cause.

They also help owners recognize when a problem is becoming more frequent.

Read Several Laser Service Reports Together

One laser service report is a snapshot.

Three years of reports become a trend line.

Compare them side by side.

Ask:

  • Are pulse counts increasing normally?
  • Are voltages changing?
  • Is measured output stable?
  • Are the same handpieces developing wear?
  • Is one error appearing repeatedly?
  • Are cooling-system repairs becoming more frequent?

This is where the real value of laser service records appears.

A machine with documented history is easier to maintain because technicians do not have to start from zero at every visit.

Service History Matters When You Sell

Documentation can also make a used machine easier to evaluate.

A future buyer can review:

  • Maintenance frequency
  • Output history
  • Major repairs
  • Head work
  • Handpiece repairs
  • Lamp replacements
  • Cooling-system history

That does not guarantee a higher selling price.

However, it reduces uncertainty.

A documented machine is easier to understand than one whose history begins with, “It worked the last time we used it.”

Do Not Diagnose the Machine From One Number

They should not have to become technicians.

  • What happens if I monitor it?

  • When should we check it again?

A good technician should be able to explain the answer in plain language.
