An aesthetic laser cooling system does much more than keep the machine from getting hot. It protects laser heads, flashlamps, electronics, pumps, and other expensive components.

Most people picture optics and electronics inside a laser. However, there is also an entire plumbing system working behind the scenes.

Pumps, filters, reservoirs, sensors, fittings, and tubing all keep coolant moving. When one part fails, the machine may shut down—or start leaking.

What Aesthetic Laser Cooling System Failures Look Like

Our recent service reports show how many forms a cooling problem can take.

We have found:

  • A Cynosure Icon leaking from a burst handpiece waterline
  • A DEKA Motus AX with a failed water pump
  • A Quanta system with cracked coolant fittings
  • A Sciton BBL with a broken, leaking water filter
  • A Syneron platform with a failed pump
  • A Lumenis system with an empty reservoir
  • Elos platforms with badly restricted filters
  • A Candela laser head leaking water and residue
  • A GentleYAG with a failed heater manifold

Some of these repairs were significant.

Others needed only a filter, fitting, refill, or targeted component replacement.

That is why early diagnosis matters.

Small Water Problems Can Become Expensive

The cooling loop protects some of the most expensive parts in the machine.

Flashlamps and laser rods create substantial heat during operation. The coolant carries that heat away.

If flow drops, the cause may be:

  • A clogged filter
  • A weak pump
  • Trapped air
  • A kinked line
  • A leaking fitting
  • A failing sensor

On many platforms, a serious flow problem may trigger a warning or shutdown.

However, not every developing problem creates an immediate fault.

Reduced cooling can increase heat and stress inside the system. Over time, that can affect seals, flowtubes, optics, and laser-head performance.

A small maintenance problem can eventually become a major repair.

Water Quality Matters Too

The correct coolant matters just as much as flow.

Many lamp-pumped systems specify deionized water or another manufacturer-defined coolant. Always follow the requirements for the specific platform.

DI filters also need routine replacement.

When we open neglected systems, we sometimes find dark water, heavily discolored filters, or filters that have been installed far beyond their service interval.

Those conditions tell us the cooling system needs closer inspection.

Dirty coolant does not automatically mean the laser head is damaged. However, it is a warning that should not be ignored.

Watch for Early Cooling-System Warning Signs

You do not need to open the machine to notice many problems.

Operators should watch for:

  • Moisture under or behind the laser
  • Flow errors
  • Low coolant warnings
  • Changes in pump sound
  • Dark or cloudy coolant
  • Rising operating temperature
  • Repeated calibration problems

Also pay attention to changes that appear after coolant service.

For example, trapped air after a refill can cause flow problems on some systems.

If a warning continues, do not keep resetting the machine and treating patients.

Find the cause.

Maintain the Aesthetic Laser Cooling System Before It Fails

Routine maintenance can prevent many cooling-system problems.

Depending on the platform, service may include:

  • Replacing DI filters
  • Replacing water or particle filters
  • Flushing the reservoir
  • Inspecting fittings
  • Checking hoses for cracks or kinks
  • Verifying pump operation
  • Testing flow sensors
  • Purging trapped air
  • Checking for leaks
  • Using the correct coolant

What to Do If You Find a Leak

If you find a puddle under the laser, stop treatment.

Power the system down and do not continue operating it until the source is identified.

The leak may come from something inexpensive, such as a fitting or hose. However, continuing to operate the machine can increase the damage.
